Bicycle Portrait Project!

For several years I have been working on my Bicycle Portrait Project.
The inception of this effort was simple enough: to photograph friends and fellow cyclists in their riding kit with their bikes, ready for a night of racing or riding.

My intent has always been to create an interesting body of work that captures the members and spirit of our cycling community. To this end I have created the Velodrome Edition of my project, dedicated to the track racing segment of our cycling world.

During the 2012-13 racing season I photographed riders and racing at the regular Tuesday Night races. The portraits were shot on the final Tuesday night of the racing season. My goal was to capture something of the spirit of the races and the esprit de corps of the racing community, as well as the intensity of the racing, and the personalities involved.

The racing community suffered a tremendous blow during the season, with the loss of Jaqueline Price-Dunn. A positive, buoyant spirit, she was liked by all. Part of my intent with this show is to honor her memory.

Above all, the racers are something of a family. They support each other, while still being fiercely competitive. But at the end of the night there is always a handshake, a smile, or a hug. They will be back to race again on the next Tuesday night.

The show opens on December 7, 2013. If you cannot make it to the opening, please check back here on that date, I will post a full gallery of all the images from the show.

I would like to thank the sponsors of this event for their generous support:

Thank you for supporting this project! It is going to be a great event.
